Purpose of study
“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.” — Plato
At All Saints, we value the importance of music and the arts. We believe music is an influential learning tool for children. Music is not simply restricted to music lessons but is embedded within other elements of the curriculum, helping to deliver content and adding value to topics. Music is prominent during our R.E. lessons, collective worship and assemblies. Children enjoy singing hymns to celebrate and promote the Catholic values of our school and faith. Teaching through song can have a positive effect on working memory, helping children to retain more information. It is, as quoted from the Model Music Curriculum, ‘creative, collaborative, celebratory and challenging,’ which is our outlook on musical education.
Implementation
At All Saints, each class has dedicated curriculum time with a music specialist from Resonate Music. Through these whole-class music lessons, children will listen, perform and compose music through active participation. Children will learn to play both rhythmic and melodic instruments and understand how music can be written down through notation. The progressive curriculum map ensures that skills are revisited and built upon as they progress through the key stages.
All children in Year 4 have the opportunity to learn the ukulele with a music specialist from Sefton Music Service.
We also offer extracurricular music clubs across Key Stage 1 and 2, with choir (KS1) and recorder club and choir (KS2)
Our aims and their impact
Our aim is to provide children with a variety of experiences to develop their musical knowledge and promote opportunities to perform to showcase and celebrate their talents. Our music curriculum aims to establish:
Opportunities for all: We believe music lessons should be accessible for all students and be an enjoyable and practical experience.
Musical confidence: We want every child to feel confident in their musical ability and talents.
Appreciate a variety of different music: Children will be exposed to a multicultural music to help develop their understanding of the cultural and historical context.
Development of skills: Children will learn to listen, perform and compose music confidently.
Transferable skills: Children will develop a toolkit of key skills that they can apply to other aspects of their education such as perseverance, problem-solving, creative-thinking and teamwork.
