Welcome to Year 6S
Hardworking, enthusiastic and dedicated, three great words used to describe the children here in Year 6! We are up for the challenge of achieving the very best we can so we leave All Saints ready for High School.
There are two great adults on hand to support every step of the way. Mrs Fassioms our class teacher; Mrs Newell, our Teaching Assistant.
Each morning we begin our day with practicing our basic skills which include; reading, calculating and sentence work. We are also given the opportunity to address any feedback in our books from the previous day’s lessons. Then before morning break we study Mathematics where we are learning to really make sense of our work, can we crack the puzzles using the systems and rules? After break, we study English in which we will cover an extremely wide variety of text types (so don’t be afraid when doing your reading at home, to enjoy a newspaper, magazine, poetry or any other type of text type you can get your hands). In Key Stage 2 we are continuing with our Spelling Mastery scheme which we do three times a week. We have our own workbooks and it really helps us to become better spellers AND readers!
We also make time to pray and we reflect on the values we are focusing on. We also pray for other people in the world who are struggling to find a safe place to live and work. During the afternoons, we study Religious Education, Science, History, Computing and P.E to name a few. Each half term we are given a main topic of study across the humanities subjects.
Autumn 1 – The Marvellous Mayans
Autumn 2 – World War II
Spring 1 – Slavery
Spring 2 – Wonderful Water
Summer 1 – Shakespeare
Summer 2 – I’m a year 6 pupil, get me out of here!
Lucky for us, some of our teachers took part in a Learner Response System study last year through Edge Hill University and we are continuing to use the technology. We each have a device that looks like a Blackberry phone and we can use them to answer questions from our teacher, respond to polls and take part in class discussions. We love them because they allow us to work at our own pace and level, give us instant feedback and make us feel like our lessons are really futuristic!
We have plenty of trips linked to our learning in class to look forward to and there will be many pictures uploaded to this page so parents can see how much fun was had.
Some of our pupils attend extra-curricular clubs such as breakfast club, football and Touch Type. Many members of Year 6 are part of the new after school choir club, led by Mrs Marnell, Mr Tyson’s football club.
If any parents or carers would like any help to support their child outside of school, especially through reading or maths, please feel free to ask questions or run past some new ideas you may have. You are always welcome.
We hope that you enjoyed reading about our class and there will be opportunities for you to come and see us working in class soon!
