Year 4/5S

Welcome to Year 4/5S

Your teacher is Miss J Evans and Teaching Assistant is

Mrs G Glynne Jones

We learn a lot in Year 5. Every morning we study Maths and English so we can be better mathematicians, readers and writers. Every day we make time to pray and we reflect on the values we are focusing on, this term it is kindness. We all believe that you can’t be too kind. We also pray for other people in the world who are struggling to find a safe place to live and work. We study Religious Education, Science, History, Computing and P.E to name a few. Our main topic for this term is ‘Rainforests’ which links in with both our Geography and Literacy topic as we are currently reading Rudyard Kipling’s ‘Just-So Stories’.

In Key Stage 2 we are continuing with our Spelling Mastery scheme which we do three times a week. We have our own workbooks and it really helps us to become better spellers AND readers!

Some of our teachers took part in a Learner Response System study last year through Edge Hill University and we are continuing to use the technology. We each have a device that looks like a Blackberry phone and we can use them to answer questions from our teacher, respond to polls and take part in class discussions. We love them because they allow us to work at our own pace and level, give us instant feedback and make us feel like our lessons are really futuristic!

In our Maths lessons, there is a real focus on knowing our times tables off by heart. We use our handsets to sit a daily test of 144 questions and are getting better all the time! Parents and guardians, you could even test your children to help them become an even more marvellous mathematician. So far this year, we’ve been consolidating our knowledge of methods for all four number operations, investigated square numbers and learned about fractions.

We have plenty of trips linked to our learning in class to look forward to and there will be many pictures uploaded to this page so parents can see how much fun was had.  We also enjoy learning through music and song.

Some of our pupils attend extra-curricular clubs such as breakfast club, football and Touch Type. Many members of Year 5 are part of the new after school choir club, led by Miss Coyne, Mr Tyson’s football club.

If any parents or carers would like any help to support their child outside of school, especially through reading or maths, please feel free to ask questions or run past some new ideas you may have. You are always welcome.

We hope that you enjoyed reading about our class and there will be opportunities for you to come and see us working in class soon!
